A free workshop open to the general public, psychologists, counselors, social workers, teachers, parents and anyone interested in learning more about the increasingly prolific use of mood-altering drugs among youth in a film, Generation Rx, that ponders both the long-term effects on the individual, as well as the troubling implications it may have on our society as a whole. Following the film members of WPSAP will discuss treatment alternatives based on Adlerian Psychology.

Saturday, January 17, 2015           10 AM to 12 PM

Bethel Park Library – 5100 West Library Road, Bethel Park, 15102

This workshop will include viewing of the film GENERATION RX and discussion of treatment options that Adlerian psychology can offer. The film focuses on the powerful stories of real families who followed the advice of their doctors and faced devastating consequences for doing so. This powerful documentary questions whether we have forced millions of children onto pharmaceutical drugs for commercial rather than scientific reasons. Generation RX may help parents decide whether the perceived benefits of these medications outweigh the serious risks to children.

Objectives:

To understand how the relationship between pharmaceutical companies and the Federal Drug Administration influences what psychiatric drugs are approved for use with children

To define the basic principles of Adler’s Individual Psychology and how they apply to children and adolescents behaviors

To understand that options based on Adlerian principles are available to address ADHD and other mental health diagnoses that children receive.

Discussion Moderators: David Underwood, President of WPSAP a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Private Practice, Vicky Rumpf Past President of WPSAP, National Certified Counselor and  Behavioral Specialist Consultant and Mobile Therapist for Allegheny Children’s Initiative and Paula Cellini member of WPSAP, Licensed Professional Counselor and is the Manager of the Health and Wellness Center at Bethlehem Haven.
