WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA SOCIETY OF ADLERIAN PSYCHOLOGY - March 2007

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

March 4, 2007

Greetings Fellow Adlerians,

While it's been cold outside and nature is still in hibernation, WPSAP has been busily working and creating some exciting new things.

First, we are pleased to announce that Duquesne University has agreed to host the Western Pa. Society for Adlerian Psychology in providing a meeting place for our next bi-monthly educational meeting. The meeting place is in the Canevin Hall Board Room.

Our next educational meeting, on March 22, will be of special interest to all of you who work with families. We are very pleased to announce that Diane Snyder, MA, has agreed to present "Navigating the turbulence of adolescence: How professionals can encourage the effective parenting of teens." This workshop will provide an overview of the STEP/Teen (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting of Teens) program, which is a widely accepted parenting program based upon the principles of Alfred Adler's Individual Psychology. Diane is an experienced presenter in the STEP parenting programs, as well as a variety of parenting education topics. For this presentation WPSAP is offering 2 CEs for APA, Act 48 and NBCC. Application has also been made to The School of Social Work at Pitt for CEs.

I want to remind everyone that our educational meeting is held separately from our business meeting. WPSAP's bi-monthly educational meeting, on the third Thursday in March, May, September, November and January will be a time of interesting exploration and discussion.

Lastly, we are looking for someone to chair a nomination committee to facilitate the election of officers at our May business meeting. Anyone interested should contact me ( pcellini@msn.com ) or Pat Walton-Donalies ( pawaltond@verizon.net ).

Hope to see you on March 22!

Paula Cellini

WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA SOCIETY OF ADLERIAN PSYCHOLOGY - May 2007

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

May 6, 2007

Greetings Fellow Adlerians:

Spring appears to have arrived, and I hope all of you are soaking up the warm sunshine...and raindrops!

Our March educational meeting was an interesting introduction to the Adlerian approach to parenting children and teens. Our thanks go to Diane Snyder for skillfully condensing STEP - Systematic Training for Effective Parenting - to give us a sample.

Our next bi-monthly educational meeting will be May 17, and the educational program presentation will be "Mental Health Diagnosis: Necessary or necessary evil?" Diane Snyder, MA will be the presenter.

An update on the business side of WPSAP - a full slate of officers for the next two years has been compiled. The nominees are: Pat Walton-Donalies - President, Diane Snyder - Vice President, Ann Schelbe - Secretary, and Vicki Rumpf - Treasurer. Besides the election, we will also be voting on the acceptance of the new bylaws that were emailed to members in early April. Following the educational presentation, anyone interested is invited to stay for the business discussion.

Again, our commitment is to invite curious folks and possibly, future Adlerians, to attend our meetings. So join us and bring a friend. A special invitation to all students who may have just finished the semester - come join us - just for fun!

Hope to see you ˜ !

Paula Cellini

May Educational Program: Mental Health Diagnosis - Necessary or Necessary Evil?

Diane Snyder will be presenting this workshop at our May meeting, which will be held at Duquesne University on May 17th from 6:30 - 8:30 pm in the Fisher Hall Conference Room. Please note that you must enter Fisher Hall through the skywalk. Parking is available at the Forbes Avenue Parking Lot of the university.

Alfred Adler viewed that abnormal and normal behavior differed in degree but not in kind. The well-adjusted individual meets life's challenges in a successful way. The mistakes in life arise out of failures to solve life's problems. These failures result from a lack of cooperation and social interest.

According to Adler, one of the basic difficulties of people who have psychological problems, such as neuroses, addiction or delinquency, is that they lack social interest. Thus one of the foremost goals of therapy is to develop this innate potential.

What does Adler have to offer the therapist today? How do his views of the process and goals of therapy fit within today's framework of mental health diagnoses?

Objectives:

  1. To define normal/abnormal behavior from an Adlerian perspective.
  2. To understand the goals of therapy, according to Adler.
  3. To implement Adler's therapy goals in working with diverse populations.

Diane Snyder has a Master's degree in counseling psychology and over 16 years experience as a family therapist. Diane is the former Executive Director of Outreach Teen & Family Services, a counseling agency serving teens and their families throughout Allegheny and Washington counties. Regarded as an authority on adolescents' risky behaviors, Diane has spoken to students, parents, and staff at several area high schools including Mt. Lebanon, Canon-McMillan and Brownsville. Diane has been a featured columnist for Mt. Lebanon Magazine and, in 2006, was named by Pittsburgh Magazine as one of the Pittsburgh area's "40 Under 40". Diane represented the state of Pennsylvania at the National Nonprofit Congress in Washington, DC in 2006. She is a founding member of WPSAP and has been teaching the STEP curriculum for 5 years.

Two (2) hours of Continuing Education will be awarded. This program is co-sponsored by the North American Society of Adlerian Psychology (NASAP). NASAP is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists and is recognized by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) to offer continuing education for counselors. NASAP maintains responsibility for this program and its content. NASAP is also approved to sponsor continuing education for ACT 48 for educators in the State of Pennsylvania. The University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work has also approved this program for two (2) hours of continuing education for social workers. There is no fee for attendance. There is a nominal charge of $5.00 for CEs for non-members of WPSAP to cover administrative costs.

Website coming! Details coming soon!

Elections to be held at May Meeting
Voting members are asked to stay after our education program for a short business meeting where we will elect officers for the next two years and vote on the revision of the by-laws.

WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA SOCIETY OF ADLERIAN PSYCHOLOGY - September 2007

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

September 13, 2007

Dear Friends,

Another year of Adlerian activity is starting in the Western Pennsylvania area! The Executive Committee has developed a "strategic plan" for continued organizational growth and for expansion of our training offerings. We are now "experts" on being able to grant CE credits through the North American Society (NASAP) and the University of Pittsburgh's School of Social Work. Our trainings this year will cover a variety of topics that we are truly excited about!

In November we'll have Mel Markowski's "Mistaken Games Parents and Teachers Play" coordinated by Vicki Rumpf. In January, Diane Synder will coordinate a presentation on Depression and in March, Ann Schelbe will coordinate a presentation on Play Therapy. May will find your president, and a youngest child, presenting on Birth Order.

Thank you to Paula Cellini for her leadership this past year and her commitment to seeing the organization move forward. Also thanks to Bob Donalies for keeping the books in order.

I want to remind everyone that our educational meeting is held separately from our business meeting. WPSAP's bi-monthly educational meeting, on the third Thursday in March, May, September, November and January will be a time of interesting exploration and discussion.

We have our website up and recommend you check it out at wpsap.org. We hope to keep everyone abreast of our activities via the 'net. If you know of someone we should add to our email list, let me know at pawaltond@verizon.net.

I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting- and bring a friend!

WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA SOCIETY OF ADLERIAN PSYCHOLOGY - October 2007

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

October 30, 2007

Dear Friends,

I am excited to report to you that the WPSAP Vice President, Diane Snyder, and I were warmly recieved at the South Carolina Society of Adlerian Psychology's Practitioner's Conference held in Myrtle Beach the weekend of September 29th. We presented the same workshop that we had given at WPSAP's September meeting, "Encouraging the Autistic Child to Thrive: Techniques That Work!"

We had gotten a positive response from our own group but going "on the road" to a large conference, where we had 26 folks choose to come to our workshop, was encouraging to Diane and I. In addition the folks that attended were very positive and encouraging in their feedback and felt that the workshop was a real help to them in understanding that the Adlerian concepts are effective in treating children with an autistic spectrum diagnosis. This kind of reception underlines for me how much we, as Adlerians, have to offer folks when it come to understanding and addressing the issues facing the mental health community, the educational system, and all of our fellow human beings. We have some very valuable information to spread and it is my hope that this Society will be in the forefront in Western Pennsylvania in providing that information.

A reminder to everyone that we have our website up and recommend you check it out at wpsap.org and if you know of someone we should add to our email list, let me know at pawaltond@verizon.net.

I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting - and bring a friend!

November Educational Program - Mistaken Games Parents: Teachers and Children Play at Home and at School!

A workshop for parents, educators, counselors, social workers and therapists presented by Vicky Rumpf, M.S.Ed., NCC.

Join us for an alternative approach to the well-meaning, but not always successful, discipline techniques routinely used by adults to get children and teens to listen and learn. This presentation was originally made by Dr. Mel Markowski at the NASAP Conference in 2004 and will address the everyday games adults and children play with respect to fair play, handling demands, establishing good behavior, bargaining, protecting, etc., and the mistaken lessons learned by our children.

Objectives:

  1. To define faulty techniques and the mistaken goals of discipline and learning that adults and children practice.
  2. To understand the goals of discipline.
  3. To be able to apply Adlerian principles and techniques in disciplining and teaching children in order to promote healthy lifestyles and positive adult/child relationships.

The following games will be discussed, and why they don't work:
The Referee Game, The Cry Wolf Game, The Say Uncle Game, The Master of Ceremonies Game, The Self-laceration Game, The Big Business Game, The Cops and Robbers Game, The Little Bo Peep Game, The Body Guard Game and The What Game Shall We Play Today.

One (1) hour of Continuing Education will be awarded. January Educational Program - DEPRESSION: Adlerian Theory and Modern Techniques of Intervention
Presented by: Joseph Dittmer, Ph.D., M.P.A., LICDC, LPCC-S, NCC, CCMHC, CST

This presentation will review Alfred Adler's theory of depression and some often used Adlerian interventions as well as some current outgrowths of this approach as seen in Cognitive Behavior Therapies.

Alfred Adler was an "EGO-PSYCHOLOGIST". That is, he saw all neurosis, including the depressions, as having the ultimate purpose to safeguard the person from a catastrophic clash with reality and its demands, expectations, tasks of social living - in order that he avoid the dangers that could ensue if his inadequacies were revealed. Therefore, what appear to be different neuroses, in reality, are only different 'safeguarding devices.'

The modern day development called Cognitive Behavior Therapy has taken many of its concepts from Adler's 'ego-psychology' and focus on the 'here and now' existence of the client. CBT as described by Beck, Ellis, Burns, Linehan, Freeman, Pretzer and Fleming and others reflect many of Adler's breakthrough concepts and point us toward practical and sensible interventions which immediately make sense to clients and help them on the road to recovery.

Objectives:

  1. To clarify Adler's theory of depression.
  2. To understand how presenting symptoms relate to goals of the client.
  3. To understand how to relate client goals to a more healthy style of living.
  4. To define interventions used by Adlerians (eg. Early Recollections, Life Style components, Most Memorable Observations) and modern day Cognitive Behavior therapists and how to appropriately introduce them into the counseling session.

Two (2) hour of Continuing Education will be awarded. WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA SOCIETY OF ADLERIAN PSYCHOLOGY - November 2008

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

November 6, 2008

Dear Friends,

We had a great kick off to the new "education year" with presenter Earl Gray giving us a very informative and interesting workshop on Lifestyle Assessment. We also want to thank Vice President Diane Snyder for her mini presentation on the Basics of Adlerian Psychology. We hope to do this periodically to give folks new to Individual Psychology a better understanding of the concepts we talk about every two months. They make so much sense and are so simple yet profound. In fact I just saw a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt that is so Adlerian I have to share it with all of you:

"Nobody can make you feel inferior without your permission."

With that said I invite you to come see what we can do to be encouraging to kids with an autistic diagnosis in our November program. See details below regarding the presentation.

A reminder that the annual membership fee of $25.00 is due and can be mailed to me or brought to the November gathering. Members are not assessed a fee for CEs and receive the newsletter with an accompanying resource page, discounts on books and more! A membership form is attached to this newsletter.

See you on the 15th and don't forget to come at little early for coffee, donuts and camaraderie!

WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA SOCIETY OF ADLERIAN PSYCHOLOGY - March 2009

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

March 19, 2009

Dear Friends,

Is it Spring yet? I know we are all ready! To prepare ourselves for Spring we can begin to get in a playful mood by attending our March education program on play therapy. Member Andrea Buchanan comes all the way from Waynesburg to attend our bimonthly programs and now has graciously agreed to present "More Play Therapy". Folks asked for "more" after last year's well attended and received presentation by member Ann Schelbe. We aim to please and heard your requests, and think this will be another rewarding experience. Please see the next article for more in-depth information on the program.

We continue to hold our meetings at the Bethel Park Library. Here's a link for directions to Bethel Park Library: www.einetwork.net/ein/bethpark/hours.htm

In addition we will serve a continental breakfast to add to the camaraderie of our group. Please email or call to let us know if you are attending so we will be able to plan accordingly.

We are looking at the possibility of sponsoring an all day conference/workshop in conjunction with the South West Division of the National Association of Social Workers. Let us know what topics interest you and whether you'd like an in-depth presentation or would prefer 4 to 6 shorter presentations on various topics, Your input counts!

See you for breakfast at 9:30 the morning of March 21st!

Pat Walton-Donalies
President, WPSAP
