Addictions: An Adlerian Perspective

This 5-hour workshop is for parents, teachers, school counselors, educators, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and anyone who deals with people with addiction problems. The workshop will focus on studying addictions from the point of view of Adlerian Psychology. Emphasis will be on the definition, development, purpose, identification, intervention, treatment, and the perceptions of the individuals involved in the addictive process. The workshop will be conducted in an atmosphere of encouragement, empathy, and equality.
In the morning, participants will:
⦁ Learn/review Adlerian principles of psychology that have proven useful in helping professionals, families and individuals understand addictions.
⦁ Record their perceptions of addicted individuals & those affected by addictions, including family members, and discuss the impact of the individual’s addictions on their lives.
⦁ Study the definition, development, purpose and identification of addictions in adolescents, adults, and the aging.
In the afternoon, participants will:
⦁ Study intervention and treatment strategies for the addicted individual, in order to assist those individuals in the school, as well as work and home settings.
⦁ Discuss how adolescent/children, adults, & the aging may be affected by addictions, and how addictions can influence their academic success, work performance, personal relationships, & careers.
⦁ Discuss how children, adolescents, adults and the aging can be helped in their response to the addiction and the addictive process.
About the Presenter: Wes Wingett, PhD, LMHP has been a counselor in private practice in Norfolk, NE since 1978. Prior to entering private practice, Dr. Wingett had been employed as a counselor in a mental health center, a university program development specialist, and in multiple educational settings as a counselor & teacher. Dr. Wingett earned his bachelor’s degree from Wayne State College, Wayne, NE and his masters and doctorate from the University of Wyoming, in Laramie, WY. Additional graduate study was completed at the University of Colorado and the University of Vermont. Dr. Wingett’s private practice focuses on providing individual, couples, and family counseling, consultation to educational institutions and businesses and presenting Adlerian training. Wes has served as a consultant in the areas of aging & long-term care solutions, domestic violence, drug & alcohol prevention and treatment, health care and wellness, & adult-child relationships.
About the Local Society: The Western Pennsylvania Society for Adlerian Psychology promotes the educational theories and practical techniques of Dr. Alfred Adler, a leading theorist in the field of mental health and the founder of child guidance centers. His theory of Individual Psychology promotes a holistic approach for each individual and is based on a model of growth. His teachings are applicable to parent/child relationships and counseling for individuals and families. We are pleased to host this NASAP workshop.
