Understanding Anger, Anxiety, and Depression: An Adlerian Approach

A workshop open to the general public, psychologists, counselors, social workers, teachers, parents & anyone interested in learning more about how the teachings of Alfred Adler apply to understanding & treating anger, depression & anxiety.

 This didactic and experiential workshop will focus on understanding anger, anxiety, and depression from an Adlerian perspective. Participants will review the basic tenets of Adlerian psychology, and will differentiate between emotions that move people away from people (disjunctive emotions) and emotions that move people toward people (conjunctive emotions). Participants will identify the purpose of emotions and will learn definitions of anger, anxiety, and depression. Participants will identify encouraging interventions to help themselves and others when angry, anxious, and depressed. The workshop will be conducted in an atmosphere of equality, empathy, education, and encouragement.

Specific objectives for the workshop include:

  1. Review of the basic tenets of Adlerian psychology;
  2. Differentiating between emotions that move people away from people  (disjunctive emotions) and emotions that move people toward people  (conjunctive emotions);
  3. Identifying the purpose of emotions;
  4. Learning definitions of anger, anxiety, and depression; and
  5. Identifying encouraging interventions to help oneself and others when angry, anxious, or depressed.

Presenter: Wes Wingett, Ph.D., LMHP, has been a counselor in private practice in Norfolk, NE since 1978. Dr. Wingett’s private practice focuses on providing individual, couple, and family counseling; consultation to educational institutions and business enterprises; and presenting Adlerian training in variety of venues. His primary interests include applying Adlerian principles to the study of addictions, education, multigenerational families, individual and couple counseling, loss and healing, psycho-educational and therapeutic groups, and stress management.  He is a contributing editor for the Journal of Individual Psychology. In addition, he has co-authored articles that have been published in professional journals, coauthored chapters in books, self-published four workbooks focusing on the application of Adlerian psychology to various challenges of living, and co-authored four workbooks on family structure, family strengths, family stressors, and family social interest.

About the Local Society:   The Western Pennsylvania Society for Adlerian Psychology promotes the educational theories and practical techniques of Dr. Alfred Adler, a leading theorist in the field of mental health and the founder of child guidance centers.  His theory of Individual Psychology promotes a holistic approach for each individual and is based on a model of growth.  His teachings are applicable to parent/child relationships and counseling for individuals and families. We are pleased to host this NASAP workshop.
